There is an example provided by the data center at the McMurdo Station in the Antarctic. As it turned out, while cooling was not a problem (just a hole in the wall to circulate air), the more troublesome issue was static electricity. The dry, cold climate actually required a lot more work in grounding and isolation than getting easy cooling to the racks. More difficult and problematic than a standard AC or water-cooled rack in a more humid climate. Servers are easily zapped to death in the poles without proper static electricity controls.

As to the ocean, well, just the opposite. Just as too little water in the air causes problems, too much is just as bad if not worse. Marine electronics suffer brutally and require special consideration. A standard PC doesn’t last long in a non-climate controlled environment near large bodies of water or at sea. Unlike the arctic climes, you have the additional threat of submersion in water and that is never good for data centers.

That doesn’t even address things like storms. There is a reason why companies don’t locate data centers right on coasts. Hurricanes and noreasters are a thing. My company was looking at data centers in the center of the country specifically to get away from coastal deployments even 60 to 100 miles inland. I live in an area where tropical storms are a relatively regular thing and even a remnant hitting the wrong place can do terrible damage.

Actual observed behavior shows that the coasts and winter climates tend to avoid data centers unless you have no choice and when you choose those places, you site carefully.
