Great post. The mention of dividends got me thinking: does anyone seriously expect the AI companies to start paying dividends any time soon? Alphabet and Meta have been the 100-ton gorillas of the stock market for decades and only just started a (tiny) dividend in 2024. If AI companies follow a similar trajectory, we won't see dividends from them until the 2040s!

It seems much more likely that they'll either continue reinvesting into growth based on the seemingly-inevitable internal rate of return exceeding cost of capital once AGI is developed or, if they do decide to return cash to shareholders, they'll do stock buybacks instead. If they go the buyback instead of dividend route, that might undermine both the UBC and SWF proposals: rather than throwing off cash that could be redistributed, the value being generated is captured purely in increased stock price.

Considering stock buybacks used to be much less popular, perhaps there needs to be a reevaluation of the Rule 10b-18 decision from 1982 that led to the current buyback-dominant state of corporate value transfer to shareholders.

Another angle to this is geographic - if AI is dominated by one country, presumably the US mor maybe China, will they offer UBI to the rest of the world, and will it differ meaningful from what citizens get? Recent trends against foreign aid are not encouraging
